Understanding the Prayer and its Power:

We Christians conveniently forget the true meaning of many Bible verses while using them in our prayers and requests to God. As there are many beautiful and powerful verses in the bible, often we fail to match them in terms of the reality while praying. It is appropriate and imperative to understand that God is capable of anything and everything, but He doesn’t have a title of ‘Magician’.

The prayer that Lord Jesus taught us in Matthew 6:9-13 is the perfect example. It says, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one”. Obviously, this is a beautiful prayer which matches perfectly the divine precepts of God and His plans towards the mankind; but not the greedy mind of the beholder asking for even more! It is funny when we pray “give us today our daily bread” and at the same time desire in our hearts for more, to store for the future!

Even though, the Lord’s Prayer has a clean purpose of our daily provision, the desire and intentions are not the same; instead we look forward to a surplus future and beyond. This confirms the lack of trust in the Lord – it is written in Matthew 6:26; “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” It is recommended that we live obedient to the Lord, and He will surely make things beautiful in his time.

It is time for us to change, as we are required to live righteously according to the firm instructions of the word. And do not plead God to forgive constantly our arrogant and stubborn nature, of being greedy; instead, ask forgiveness from God to create a new man within, submitting the whole life in that holy grace, expecting only the good things of heaven. In other words, our daily prayers to the almighty God should match our righteous living by forgiving others and eliminating greed totally in life – if not, it is more like blaspheming God and His commands.

Therefore, trust in the Lord for our entire life which includes our daily provisions. And believe that our prayers are not necessarily the babbling of tongue; instead, it is the proper understanding and living in the word of God, and thus glorifying the Lord through our inner-being. And those beautiful and powerful bible verses we mix in our prayers are the first ones to accomplish, if they match the plan and purpose of God in our life. Amen
