Though nauseating as it sounds ‘dog returning to its own vomit’, the word of God is true to the point nothing is lesser than this comparison when someone forsakes the Lord and goes back to their old filthy ways. As it is written in 2 Peter 2:20-22, NIV-Bible; "If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them. Of them the proverbs are true: "A dog returns to its vomit" and, "A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud."
Well, through the above verses, the bible is reminding that its contents are sacred enough not to violate once accepted. And it continues saying that it’s better not to have known them, than to have known and then forsaking it. At a glance, this particular bible-chapter (2 Peter 2) speaks about the false prophets and teachers as they devise new stories to deceive people. Their ways are more like the ways of the world and often substitute the bible-prosperity with the luxuries and richness of this world. And convincingly, the richness and luxuries of this world comes with a price!
To fulfill the bible-prophesy that says “a dog returns to its own vomit”, most of these impostors teaches the innocent listeners that their future sins are forgiven for ever. As a matter of fact, the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross, earned us a new life in Him, providing the same mind-set to live righteous ever. And the mentioned free gift of grace helps those who believe in His name to reconcile with God and to have a new life – while understanding the precepts of Lord as they start living in its truth by denying the evil.
The word of God says in Proverbs 9:10, NIV-Bible; “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” In other words, the fear and reverence to God is good enough for a believer to remain holy as much as possible. Besides, the forgiveness and mercy of the Lord is available for those who truly repent (1 John 1:9); not to repeat the same old sins again and again, but to remain firm in His promises and love. Since we are weak by nature, we are made strong in Him – as it is written in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, NIV-Bible; “But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Therefore, once accepted the Lord, take it as a privilege and never turn back as we remain in His love forever. And reject those doctrines which cancel the seriousness of continuous sinning, under the name of sacred grace. Amen
